I
've been to a lot of gigs over the years, but meeting artists isn't something I've ever really had much experience with. To be fair, it's not something I've ever really given much thought to. I always assumed that it would be fairly straightforward, I'd be calm and collected, say hi, have a quick chat and get a photo, then be on my way. How hard could it be? Well as it turns out, the one opportunity I had to meet a music producer I've been a big fan of for ages went.......not so great. Let me get into the time I met Ekali.
Initially I thought it was a joke. When my friend told me that tall guy with his back to me was the artist I was paying to see, I didn't take it seriously. So I walked up, patted him on the shoulder, and yeah, turns out my friend wasn't lying, he turned around and bam, I was face to face with Ekali.
I was initially quite shocked, but thankfully I made a quick recovery. I let him know how great it was to meet him, how happy I was that he was back in Perth, and how much I admired him as a producer. Only after about ten seconds did I realise that I hadn’t said any of this out loud, and was instead stood there gawping at him, trying to convince myself not to look like a dickhead whilst simultaneously managing to look like a dickhead.
So there I was, stood face to face with one of my idols, drunkenly rambling about how excited I was for his set, and taking possibly the worst positioned selfie I've ever seen.
Thankfully, as you'd expect from a Canadian, Ekali was incredibly friendly, and clearly didn’t have too much of a problem listening to me ramble for a couple minutes, and occasionally nodding his head in agreement.
When my girlfriend came and started speaking with him, it gave me a minute to clear my head, and I realised that by now, I’d probably taken up enough of his time. So I thanked him for letting me ramble, and went to shake his hand.
Instead of shaking my hand, this giant of a man pulled me in and hugged me.
There I was, being hugged with one of my favourite music producers, life literally couldn’t get much better than that.
And that was it. He said it was great to meet us both, then we went on our way. Granted, I probably shouldn’t have been that surprised to meet him, I was at his own gig, but it was the fact that he emerged from the Green Room to actually come and watch the show before his set, I’ve never seen another artist do that.
So yeah, there’s a nice little story about the time I made a fool of myself in front of one of my heroes, hope you guys enjoyed, and you’ll be hearing from me again soon. See you next time.
