S
ynths, subs and sold-out shows - I don’t know how they do it, but Filth just keep on proving why they’re one of the most dominant events to ever grace Perth’s bass scene.
If this wasn’t obvious enough before, it’s safe to say their latest party with dons Calcium, Chibs & Kronex all but confirms it as waves of punters crammed into Court to set the record for Filth’s biggest show to date.
Set to be a long day for some, the tantalising list of local talent alongside the triple-threat headline brought plenty of bodies through the doors early on, and it was great to see punters showing some support at the side stages.
Apex, 7inn, NMD - there was a lot of talent on display, but Gud Riddance has to take my MVP for the night, with his heavy chops & bouncy energy setting the basement stage on fire before the main event.
Kronex
A sneaky B2B between Kron & Nexu5 - Kronex had the courtyard absolutely heaving as they stepped up for the first headline set of the night, and it wasn’t long before their synergy had them bouncing off each other delivering truckloads of mashups & chops to the massive crowd.
Performing with a beautiful sense of flow, there were times during the hour when it felt they lacked the intensity of that “holy-fu**ing-sh*t” aura they were going for, but their unique underground track selection and impressive B2B skills proved more than enough to keep the crowd hooked.
Their music might not have stolen the show, but the visuals tell a different story - Bright acid-wash blends, jagged light streams and strobes, melting waves, vibrant logos and colours bouncing around the screen - it was just what they needed for that extra oopmh.
Chibs
If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like taking the sound of mud being slapped and making it into music - Chibs is your man. A master at manipulating the wavy & weird, his signature wobbles rolled effortlessly through the courtyard as he stepped up to deliver a dark & diverse set.
A few gaps opened up during his set, but those who stayed were treated to a display that was easily my favourite of the night. To some he might not have stood out as anything spectacular, but it was the wonderful diversity he kept dishing out that really sucked me into his set.
His flow between darker wobbles and crowd-pleasing riddim kept everyone on their toes, and there was a certain excitement to not knowing what he’d pull out next. Nothing he did felt overplayed or overdone, and while a bit more energy wouldn’t have hurt, he got his job done in style.
Calcium
Making waves in the riddim community these last few months, you could feel the crowd surge the second Calcium stepped up for the main event.
From the second his vivid skeletal backgrounds dropped into place it was all systems go, and that heavy-hitting metallic riddim the crowd had been craving came out in force.
Some artists come to put on a great show, some come to have a good time - Calcium was there for both. Finding that perfect balance between business & pleasure, his energy paired with his focused mixing made him a joy to watch.
Matching his signature choppy riddim with an onslaught of strobes & smoke machines, his set was a non-stop hype train from start to finish.
As the event wound down and the trek to kickons began, you'd have been hard-pressed to find someone disappointed with the experience Filth had offered up.
A diverse roster with strong supports, moshes that didn’t consume the entire floor, impressive production & a good clean crowd - not much could’ve been done to make it any smoother. Big ups to Filth for bringing us down to cover the event - we’re all too keen for the next one.
Until then, party safe, stay hydrated, and we'll see you next time.
