pex - the highest point of achievement; a climax. A seemingly fitting name for Excision's fifth album, which blessed the ears of dubstep fans all over the world on the 14th of August, 2018. One of the most loved live dubstep performers in the world right now, Excision is a man who can seemingly do no wrong, and Apex almost perfectly sums up why.

There is no denying that Excision has pumped out some absolute bangers in his day. If you've even walked past a dubstep gig in the last two years, you'll most likely have heard his heavy hitting tune 'Throwin' Elbows', and I can't count the amount of times that 'Drowning' has almost made me cry. Even his older beats like 'Codename X' and 'X Rated' go hard.

With three pre-released songs, that still meant we were gifted with 11 brand new Excision tracks, which included features from Sullivan King, Akylla, Dion Timmer and Space Laces. A beautifully diverse album, Apex really does have everything, from bass-crushing songs like 'Exterminate' and 'Vault', to light floating trap tunes like 'Home' and 'Die For You'.

Picking a favourite in an album like this was hard, but after giving it multiple listens, I just couldn't pull myself away from 'Exterminate'. The long, winding mechanical build up is just amazing, and the drop feels like it's going to bring the house down. '1 On 1' is another absolute stomper, and it seems like Excision and Space Laces, when together, just can't make any mistakes. 'Die For You' also makes my list. There's something about Akylla's voice that gets me every time, I just can't shake it.

But of course, you can't have good without a bit of bad, everyone knows that, and there were a couple songs on the album that just didn't quite tickle my fancy.

Now, a lot of people are going to disagree with me, but when it comes to Sullivan King, I just don't see the appeal. He's incredibly talented there's no denying that. He can sing, scream, play guitar and produce EDM, but I'm rarely finding a track he features on to be that good. 'Fight Through The Pain' just didn't sit well with me, and neither did 'Where Are You', which scared the shit out of me to be perfectly honest.

Of course, as can be expected, good outweigh the bad. 'Tonight' is a fantastically creepy track which absolutely bangs, and 'Vault' has possibly one of the greatest buildups in existence, prove me wrong.

Once again, I'm not here to score anything out of 10, I'm not a critic I'm just a guy who likes music. I definitely recommend giving Apex a listen, I don't think you'll regret it. Even if it's not your style, there's bound to be something on an album as diverse as this that you'll enjoy.
