PinkMilk's Essential Study Mixes

Music - the only thing that can make studying bearable

Andrew Ring

I

find it’s often the week after study week that people truly come to terms with the impending doom of assignments and exam preparation, and I still find it impressive that despite the fact we know it’s coming every year, it always managed to take us by surprise.

We here at PinkMilk understand these feelings all too well, so what better to help you through the late uni scramble than our tried and tested collection of study mixes and albums for all persuasions. Enjoy!

Nero's BBC Essential Mix, 2010 - https://soundcloud.com/nero/nero-essential-mix-first

Reddit polls might not be the most trustworthy source, but when Nero’s 2010 BBC mix was voted in as the best of all time we found it hard to disagree. An ageless journey from start to finish - old school dubstep & DnB paired with immaculate song selection and flawless mixing tick all the boxes for a perfect mix.

What So Not Flying to Europe, 2014 - https://soundcloud.com/whatsonot/european-tour-mix

From the opening bar of Chrome Sparks’ Goddess to the dying seconds of What So Not’s still unreleased edit of RL Grime’s Core, this mix fires on all cylinders. Its quirky song choice and masterful composition is everything we love about WSN, and sadly many of the things that have gone missing from his shows of late. A perfect way to relive those glory days.

RL Grime's Halloween V, 2016 - https://soundcloud.com/rlgrime/halloween-v

It’d be criminal not to include at least one RL Halloween mix in this list. Arriving perfectly in the peak October study period the Halloween mix release is an event in its own right, with 2016’s selection standing head and shoulders above the rest. Introducing us to acts like Droeloe & Hex Cougar, the perfect mixing and song choice has made it a staple in my collection ever since.

Odezsa Diplo & Friends Mix, 2016 - https://soundcloud.com/odesza/diplo-and-friends

If you’re a fan of Odesza’s emotional music and live shows then I’ve every reason to believe you’ll love their mixes with the same passion. One of the many acts embracing the idea of consistent mix releases on SoundCloud, if you’re looking for something that fades into the background then look no further than Odesza’s Diplo & Friends mix from 2016.

Habstrakt Triple J Mix Up, 2018 - https://soundcloud.com/adam-habstrakt/triple-j-mix-up

In a period where some of us became increasingly disenfranchised with the bass house scene, Habstrakt’s ‘pull-no-punches’ 2018 mix brought us right back into the fold. It crams a staggering 51 tracks into just under an hour, and went a long way to normalise the French producers name beyond simply ‘that guy who made Chicken Soup with Skrillex’.

Sam Gellaitry Triple J Mix Up, 2018 - https://soundcloud.com/nomorewaves/samg-mixup

From the king of 2018’s electronic underground comes an hour-long mix comprised entirely of original sounds. Truly a Wunderkid, the Scottish producer’s blend of orchestral sounds with the staple synths & drums of club electronic harmonise masterfully in a raucous, well-constructed mix.

Feed Me's BBC Essential Mix, 2013 - https://soundcloud.com/feedme/feed-me-bbc-radio-1-essential

Known by plenty via his DnB producing moniker Spor, raucous energy is the falvour of month with Feed Me’s peerless essential mix. It’s jammed with two straight hours of nothing but his own tracks and edits, and while he may have just released a new album, we can’t help being dragged back to this mix for a guaranteed good time.
